The 3D gynaecological ultrasound examination is a type of ultrasonography based on similar principles as the conventional 2D scan, but the ultrasound waves are sent through different angles. The 3D ultrasound allows us to see the width, length and depth of each picture.<\/p>\n

What are the advantages of the 3D versus the 2D ultrasound?<\/h3>\n

A gynaecologist who is experienced in ultrasound examination can diagnose any uterine pathology with the 2D scan. However, in some cases the 3D scan is needed in order to confirm a diagnosis<\/strong>. Especially in cases of submucosal fibroids the location and size of the fibroid is crucial in order to decide which surgical method is more appropriate (hysteroscopy or laparoscopy). Also, the 3D ultrasound examination helps the woman to understand<\/strong> the location and appearance of the pathology.<\/p>\n

    How is 3D ultrasound performed?<\/h3>\n

    The 3D ultrasound is preferably performed during the 2nd<\/sup> half of the menstrual cycle and lasts as long as the conventional 2D ultrasound examination. The diagnosis is immediate and there is no need for use of drugs or dye.<\/p>\n

    Dr Ioanna Tsoumpou trained extensively in the gynaecological ultrasound and has successfully completed the RCOG <\/strong>\u0399<\/strong>ntermediate Ultrasound Modules in Early Pregnancy Complications and in Gynaecology.<\/strong>\u00a0She also obtained, after passing the relevant exams, the license by the Greek Ministry of Health<\/strong> for conducting obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound examinations.<\/p>\n
