Acute or chronic pelvic pain is one of the most common reasons that women visit their gynaecologist. In the majority of cases there is no significant pathology detected. Especially for women in reproductive age, pelvic pain is usually associated with physiological ovarian changes during the menstrual cycle. However, in some cases it could be associated with pathological conditions such as:
- Endometriosis
- Ovarian torsion
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Hydro- or pyo-salpinx
The gynaecological ultrasound examination, combined with the relevant clinical history and the findings of the clinical examination, help us decide what kind of treatment and further investigations are needed.
Nowadays, the ultra modern ultrasound machines guarantee for excellent imaging in the hands of experienced gynaecologists. Especially in the case of endometriosis, we can diagnose endometriosis affecting not only the ovaries (endometrioma), but also other pelvic organs such as the bowel and the bladder.
