Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Dr Ioanna A. Tsoumpou is sub-specialized in Maternal Fetal Medicine, in high-risk pregnancies and in the colposcopic examination and management of the pathology of the uterine cervix.
Dr Tsoumpou trained in Obstetrics and Gynaecology exclusively in the United Kingdom in University Teaching Hospitals. She completed the seven years of specialization (2004-2011) in posts recognised for training by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG). She is one of the few gynaecologists in Greece who have completed the training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the United Kingdom and as result was awarded the relevant certification of specialization “Certificate of Completion of Training” (CCT).
Dr Tsoumpou was born and raised in Aigio, Greece. She is a graduate of the Medical School of the University of Ioannina (1994-2000) with grade “very good”. She completed her medical service, as well as the required time of specialization in General Surgery at the General Hospital of Aigio. In 2004 she departed for the United Kingdom in order to continue her training. The doctor’s training was completed in positions certified for specialization by RCOG in acknowledged University Hospitals (>5000 childbirths/year) like Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, St Mary’s Hospital in Manchester and King’s College University Hospital in London.
The doctor is a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG) since 2009, after the successful completion of both written and oral exams. During her specialization time, Dr Tsoumpou completed the MSc in Advanced Gynaecological Endoscopy at the University of Surrey in the UK. She trained in the diagnosis and management of endometriosis and in the laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery. The doctor was also trained in diagnostic and therapeutic colposcopy and as a result is certified by the British Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (BSCCP).
Dr Tsoumpou has sub-specialized for two years (2011-2013) in Fetal Medicine in one of the leading centres worldwide, the Harris Birthright Research centre for Fetal Medicine at King’s College University Hospital in London, under the supervision of Professor Kypros Nikolaides. She also trained in fetal cardiac ultrasound scan from the top scientist in the field, Professor Lindsey Allan. The doctor has been awarded the Diploma in Fetal Medicine (Fetal Medicine Foundation, London) that is considered to be the highest distinction in the field of Fetal Medicine.
The doctor continued her sub-specialization in gynaecological ultrasound scanning at King’s College University Hospital in London that is considered amongst the most innovative centres of gynaecological scanning worldwide. She gained significant experience and successfully completed the RCOG Intermediate Ultrasound Modules in Early Pregnancy Complications and in Gynaecology. The doctor is also certified for conducting obstetrics and gynaecological ultrasound examinations, after passing the relevant exams organised by the Greek Ministry of Health.
Dr Tsoumpou has exceptional teaching and research experience. She holds a Doctorate of Medicine and Philosophy (PhD) by the Medical School of the University of Ioannina, with honours, and has successfully completed the MSc in Advanced Gynaecological Endoscopy at the University of Surrey. Finally, she has participated and given lectures in various conferences worldwide and has published scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals.
The doctor returned to Greece in 2014, after 10 years of professional experience in the United Kingdom. She is the director of clinics both in Athens and in Aigio, her home town.
